To patients of P. Ashley Wackym, a surgical otologist-neurotologist at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, a diagnosis of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) can feel like a death sentence.

Commentary: Two decades of stagnant funding have rendered Canada uncompetitive in biomedical research
You may imagine that the hard part of being a Canadian scientist is having a bright idea. However, while curiosity, persistence and inventiveness are prerequisites for scientific success, the major obstacle to being a biomedical scientist in Canada is obtaining research funding.

Rucaparib efficacious in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer
For patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, treatment with rucaparib is associated with significantly longer duration of imaging-based progression-free survival compared with a control medication, according to a study published online Feb. 16 in the New England Journal of Medicine to coincide with the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual Genitourinary Cancers Symposium, held from Feb. 16 to 18 in San Francisco.

Harnessing plant molecules to harvest solar energy
Our current solar panels aren't very efficient; they are only able to convert up to about 20% of the sun's energy into electricity. As a result, to generate a lot of electricity, the panels require a lot of space—sometimes leading forests to be cut down or farms to be replaced by solar. If solar panels were more efficient, much smaller panels could make the same amount of electricity, and wouldn't claim as much land.

A multi-turn energy recovery accelerator that achieves high beam power with lower power consumption
Particle accelerators are devices that use electromagnetic fields to speed up particles and collide them together or against a specific target. These devices are widely used by physicists to study particles, the forces that drive them and interactions between them.

Research finds men take more risks on spending decisions when the prospects of financial returns are unknown
In everyday life, people have to make decisions in uncertain situations in which they have incomplete information, but how individuals behave in such instances is influenced by their gender. Men are more likely to interpret any information about an investment opportunity "optimistically" and can more easily be persuaded into making risky financial decisions, suggests new research from the Rady School of Management at the University of California San Diego.

Highly efficient separation and enrichment of hafnium achieved by advanced membrane separation system
Hafnium (Hf) has no independent ore in nature; it is always closely symbiotic with zirconium (Zr) in a homogeneous form, and accounts for only approximately 2% of Zr.

In a recent study published in Science Advances, a research team led by Profs. Dai Jianwu and Zhao Yannan at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences demonstrated a strategy for covalent conjugation between biomaterials and cells to construct spinal cord-like tissue with drug-guiding function for spinal cord injury (SCI) repair.

Fish don't dither: A new study investigates danger-evasion tactics
Decisions are difficult. Humans often find themselves deliberating between multiple conflicting alternatives, or frustratingly fixated upon a single option. When faced with a threat, zebrafish larvae don't have that luxury. The direction they take to escape from a predator is a matter of life and death.

New species of perennial herb, Veronicastrum wulingense, discovered in Hubei, China
A new species of Veronicastrum wulingense was recently discovered by a research team from the Wuhan Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Pingbaying National Forest Park, southwest Hubei, China. The new species is the first identified and named by the research team, and the only new species of this genus published in Chinese mainland in the past four decades.

Nearly half of children on Medicaid lack outpatient follow-up within a month after emergency care for mental health
Only 56% of Medicaid-enrolled children received any outpatient follow-up within 30 days after discharge from the Emergency Department (ED) for a mental health concern, according to a large study published in the journal Pediatrics. Rates of timely follow-up among Black children were particularly low, with 10% fewer receiving an outpatient mental health appointment within 30 days compared to white children.

Study: Pregnant women on ADHD medications shouldn't worry about pediatric neurodevelopmental disorders
Women around the world who have taken medication to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during their pregnancy can now breathe a sigh of relief. There are no differences in rates of neurodevelopmental disorders between children who were exposed and those who were unexposed to stimulant medication in-utero, according to new research conducted by research conducted by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York and Aarhus University in Denmark and published February 9 in Molecular Psychiatry.

Teens aren't small adults: Rethinking surgical treatment of adolescent clavicle fracture
Until about 15 years ago, most clavicle fractures were allowed to heal with minimal medical intervention. That changed after a 2007 study reported better shoulder function after plate-fixation surgery. Although the study participants were adults, the rate of surgical treatment subsequently increased across all age groups.
